Elvis and God

Assembly of God Church, Elvis

A virtual prayer page dedicated to Elvis and all of our ancestors who have gone home to the Lord. The actual small church pictured above was the very same Assembly of God Pentecostal Church Elvis attended with his family. It has now been restored and placed on the grounds of Elvis' boyhood home. Elvis spent many hours in this church. He was a mere toddler, two or three years old, when at one Sunday mass, as he heard the gospel music, wriggled down from his Momma's lap and ran up to sing along with the choir. Elvis felt that special calling, even at such a young age; a calling to praise God through words and music. From that moment on Elvis' mission in life became clear: to love God and to sing His praises.

Elvis kept a Bible with him always, having had several copies wherein he had scribbled notes inside near his favorite passages. He loved the Holy book so much that he wanted others to feel as he did so he kept a trunk full of Bibles and gave them out to family and friends along the way. Actually, Elvis had often thought of becomming a preacher.

Elvis BiblePerhaps the greatest entertainer of our lifetime, Elvis believed in God and spoke freely about Him and of "the Word." Barbara Lee remembers Elvis asking her "What's the Word?" to which she replied: "God!" Here was a man who knew every verse in the Bible by heart. Pious as he was, like all of us, he was also a sinner. Thankfully, we have a merciful God who is forgiving...if we would confess our sins and refrain from them.

After losing his beloved mother, Elvis sought a spiritual journey, delving more into spiritual and religious books, saturating himself with varied knowledge on the topics, and quite often speaking about what he had learned, to others. In essence, he was searching to find where his Momma had gone. The late Deborah Walley remembered that Elvis had become very spritual. Once he had asked her out on a date that turned most unusual. Instead of fun and games, he taught her about the God he knew and spirituality. Deborah was so impressed she began to think of Elvis as her "teacher." It was not difficult to think of Elvis in that way because he was an awesome teacher, on just about every topic, but, especially, on faith. As Barbara Lee remembers, "he knew so much about everything that I started calling him a 'wise man,' to which he would then follow up with an acapella version of 'Wise men say...'."

Donna Douglas, too, shared a spiritual journey with Elvis, both of them, along with the help of Elvis' hairstylist, Larry Geller, began studying the works of guru, Paramahansa Yogananda. On the set of "Frankie and Johnny," Elvis and Donna sat down to some serious spiritual discussions. Elvis had a good deal of respect for Donna, who later opted out of things spiritual and reverted to Christianity. Elvis, though he had never "lost" God or his way, had become satisfied enough with what he had gleaned from other religious orders and returned entirely to God and to Christianity. In today's troubled world, Christianity is under relentless attack and Christians, even here in America, are being persecuted for their faith. Elvis would have stood up in defense of the faith of Christ without question.

For those who remember Elvis and his spiritual ways, Elvis was also a gifted "healer." He could heal with his hands, but also with his voice; a unique voice that could only have come from God.

More importantly is the message of the Rosary. Elvis had heard about it, and sang about it, but did not know how to pray it. The Rosary should be extremely important to all Christians, not just to Catholics. As we come into more evil and uncertain changes in the world around us, and as Satan and his minions run rampant across these United States, pray the Rosary for it is the one weapon we Christians have to help hold back satan and his evil tyrade. You can read about praying the Rosary here... How to Pray the Rosary

One day, not long before he died, Elvis asked Barbara Lee if she was Roman Catholic. Elvis told her that he had gone into a few Catholic churches and that they were just beautiful. At the time he asked she had told him that she was studying the faith as well as other Christian faiths. For almost five years Barbara Lee studied theology and memoirs of Church teachers and Saints. Had he been alive to hear what she had learned, Barbara Lee suspected that Elvis may have considered looking further into the Catholic faith since he appeared somewhat curious and always receptive to everything God. A second page will be put up to detail some of those teachings along with special prayers for the dead. It is important, now more than ever, that we understand the truth about God and the Church He created.

As you reflect here on the memory of a wonderful human being, and on the lives of others who knew God, remember that the time is come for us to recapture faith and hold onto God as close as we can, for the "end days" are just around the bend; two of the five signs given in the Bible have already come to pass. May God Bless us all... every one, and may He continue to Bless the United States of America and the world, and protect the faithful in Christ.
